DBT for Children: Helping Parents Help their Children
Dr. Francheska Perepletchikova
Associate Professor of Psychiatry, UMass Chan Medical School, Worcester, USA
Workshop Goals:
-
To provide tools and case examples for clinicians to effectively integrate DBT-C into their practice and highlight strategies to balance interventions across the child, caregiver, and broader environmental systems.
-
Detail differences between DBT standard model and DBT-C;
-
Explore how DBT-C modifies therapeutic techniques to suit the emotional and cognitive capacities of pre-adolescent children.
-
Outline the extensive parent-training component in DBT-C.
-
Describe how DBT-C targets both the external controlling factors (i.e., the relationship with the environment) and the internal controlling factors (i.e., the relationship with self). The latter consideration represents the major addition to the standard DBT model, which addresses primarily external controlling factors.

Expected Outcomes:
-
The process of development of DBT-C from standard DBT
-
Evidence and benefits of DBT-C
-
The role of DBT-C in identifying and addressing external and internal factors related to emotional dysregulation in children.
